MaB Collemeluccio Reserve
Arrival at the “Mab Collemeluccio – Montedimezzo Reserve; a protected natural area, one of the eight Italian “Biosphere Reserves“. The MaB (Man and Biosphere Program – Unesco 1971 – Man and Biosphere) are a network of terrestrial and coastal / marine localities and ecosystems recognized worldwide for their high naturalistic value. The Reserve was founded in 1977 and divided into two nuclei fifteen kilometers apart, with peculiar geomorphological and vegetational characteristics: Collemeluccio in the municipality of Pescolanciano and Montedimezzo in the territory of Vastogirardi, for a total extension of 654 hectares. In 2006 the AssoMAB Consortium was established whose effective members are seven municipalities (Carovilli, Pescolanciano, Chiauci, Vastogirardi, San Pietro Avellana, Pietrabbondante and Roccasicura), as well as the University of Molise, the Biodiversity Office of Isernia and the Molise Region in order to achieve an expansion and zoning of the Reserve with an increase in the surface from 651 to 25268 hectares. The two areas are accessible thanks to a wide network of paths: in particular, the Colle San Biagio path in Montedimezzo guarantees accessibility for the handicapped and is specifically equipped for use by people with disabilities, with paths paved with light slopes and there are wheelchair access.
Along the path, made available free of charge, educational panels have also been installed in Braille, with information on trees and environmental characteristics, as well as a guide in Braille on the peculiarities of the path. Audio devices can also be used for route information. The structures present also are equipped with toilets for people with disabilities. In addition, in Montedimezzo there is the Visitor Center with sections dedicated to geology, woods and fauna, a projection room, wildlife enclosures and aviaries that house the wild fauna in difficulty recovered on the territory.
