Venafro, the Molise south gate, is a land of ancient origins. The first relevant settlements recall stories from almost 3000 years ago, all of them linked to the valiant people of the Samnites.

But what nowadays represent the symbol of the city, are ancient evidences of the old Venafrum, a colony of veterans of the army of Augustus. Among these, stands the theatre, one of the most imposing of the whole peninsula.
However, the wonderful cycle of frescos dates back to the XVI Century (1521-1527 AC). Enrico Pandone, Lord of the City, had 30 natural size horses painted inside the castle of Venafro and, still today, they are considered as the most original equestrian collection known in Europe.
