DAY 1 – ISERNIA
Arrival in Isernia late morning/early afternoon, and check-in at the hotel. Walk through the old town and visit to the Cattedrale di San Pietro Apostolo and its excavations.
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 2 – SANT’ANGELO IN GROTTE – CASTELPETROSO – SEPINO
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Sant’Angelo in Grotte, a very small municipality of enormous religious importance. It is here that the Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo is located, which is believed to have been frequented by the archangel Michael before his move to the Gargano. We continue to Chiesa di San Pietro in Vincoli, where we will have the opportunity to visit the “Cripta delle opere di misericordia” (Crypt of the Works of Mercy), which houses important and fascinating medieval frescoes dating back to around the end of the 14th century.
Then, we will continue on to Castelpetroso to visit the majestic Basilica della Madonna Addolorata, which stands on the site where some shepherd children witnessed the apparition of the Virgin Mary at the end of the 19th century, and which continued to be the scene of several miraculous episodes.
Lunch in a typical restaurant.
After lunch, we will leave for Sepino, a municipality belonging to the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Visit to the ancient Chiesa di Santa Cristina, dating from between 1000 and 1100, and its crypt founded in 1570. We will climb up to admire the beauty of the Cappella del Tesoro, commissioned by Francesco Carafa in 1600, which holds several relics, including the arm of Santa Cristina.
Transfer to the archaeological area of Altilia, where you will walk among the remains of the ancient Roman city of Altilia.
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 3 – ROCCAVIVARA – MATRICE – CAMPOBASSO
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Roccavivara, a municipality in the province of Campobasso, home to the wonderful Santuario di Santa Maria del Canneto, dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries.
We will then set off for Matrice to admire the evocative and mysterious Chiesa di Santa Maria della Strada, which dates back, it seems, to 1100 and is surrounded by greenery.
We will move to Campobasso for lunch.
After lunch, Visit to Campobasso’s beautiful churches, such as the Chiesa di San Giorgio, the oldest in the city and probably built on the ruins of a pagan temple; Chiesa di San Bartolomeo, one of the oldest examples of Romanesque art in Campobasso, close to the Monforte Castle; Chiesa di Santa Maria del Monte, located opposite the Castle and first documented in 1241.
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 4 – ISERNIA
Breakfast at the hotel. Visit to the Eremo dei Santi Cosma e Damiano, located on a hill outside the town and dating from around 1100.
Return to the hotel and departure for the return journey.
